On the night of 23 January 1904 almost the whole of Ålesund burned down. Ten thousand people were made homeless in the middle of winter. Three years later a new town stood finished, built in stone and in the fashion of the day: Art Nouveau.
The tour runs from the pharmacy by the Brosundet inlet, through the park and up to Aksla. You have to read names in stone – and count steps.
Good to know
The last stop is at the top of a long staircase of 418 steps. It is steep but has railings and benches on the way. It can be slippery in rain and in winter.
