Amsterdam began as a dam across the river Amstel. Around it grew a city that in the seventeenth century was the richest in the world.
The tour runs from Dam Square to the Jordaan quarter. You have to count, search for a house number in a hidden courtyard and look closely at the tops of towers and domes.
Good to know
The Begijnhof is an inhabited courtyard that closes in the evening – walk the tour in the daytime and keep quiet inside. Flat all the way, but watch out for cyclists.
