During the restoration of the old wharf a carpenter found a note under the floorboards of a merchant's house. It is signed Hinrich Brandt, merchant, 1704 – two years after the whole wharf burned. Brandt writes that he kept two ledgers: one for the Kontor, and one nobody was to see.
The museum has asked you to follow his trail. It runs from the fish market through the old quarter and in behind the fronts of the wharf. At every stop you have to find something that is really there – a year on a gable, a sign on a corner, a fish made of wood. Each stop gives letters, and in the end the place where the other book lies.
Hinrich Brandt and the note are made up. The fire of 1702, the rules of the Hanseatic merchants and everything you see along the way are real.
Good to know
Walk it in daylight – the puzzles are read off gables, signs and sculptures. The wooden floors in the alleys of the wharf are uneven and slippery in rain. GPS can be imprecise between the wooden houses; check in manually if it misses. Bring rainwear.
