Agent Lark

Berlin, October 1964. Under the street the students are digging a tunnel. The courier known as Lark has to carry a single word across to the other side. Follow her diary along the Wall.

One continuous story from the first stop to the last. The plot is made up – the places and the history you meet are real.

In Bernauer Straße the border ran along the house fronts: the pavement was in the West, the buildings in the East. In the autumn of 1964 a group of students dig their way forward twelve metres under the street, from a disused bakery in the West to a back yard in the East. Lark is the cover name of their courier. She has a West German passport and can cross the border and come back the same day. Her job is to tell those who are to escape: which doorway, which night – and which word to whisper in the dark. You walk along the Wall today with her diary. At every stop you have to find something that stands there now. Each stop gives a letter, and in the end the password. Lark and the diary are made up. The tunnels, the numbers and the password are real.

Good to know

The whole route runs outdoors along the memorial in Bernauer Straße and can be walked at any time, but the plaques need daylight. The plaques are in German – the numbers you need are easy to find. Flat all the way. Bring two phones if you can: stop 1 is split in two.
