On the other side of the harbour lies Christianshavn, the district Christian IV laid out as a separate merchants' town in the early seventeenth century. Here are canals and houseboats, the church with the city's most dizzying staircase – and the free town of Christiania. The route begins at the Black Diamond and ends on the bridge with a view of Nyhavn. Christiania has rules of its own: respect the signs, especially about photography.
