The fortress town

A free ferry, a king on the square and a town shaped like a star.

The Old Town of Fredrikstad is the best-preserved fortress town in the Nordic countries. Inside the ramparts lie cobbled streets, barracks and wooden houses almost as in the seventeenth century – and people still live here. The tour is short and flat. You have to find out what the ferry costs, read a plinth and climb the rampart to see the shape of the town.

Good to know

The whole route is outdoors and can be walked at any time. Cobbles everywhere. The ramparts have no fences towards the moat – keep an eye on small children.
