From Belém Vasco da Gama sailed for India in 1497. The riches that came back paid for the monastery and the tower that stand here today.
Belém lies a few kilometres west of the centre; take tram 15 or the train. You have to read a date on a bakery, see what a prince is holding in his hands and search for an animal on a tower.
Good to know
Every stop is seen from outside – you need no tickets. There is little shade along the river. Use the underpass to cross the wide road to the monument.
