On All Saints' Day 1755 Lisbon was struck by one of the most powerful earthquakes in history. The city that was rebuilt is the one you walk through today.
The tour runs from the river up to Chiado. You have to look at pavements and facades, find what is missing from a church and read a date on a bookshop.
Good to know
It is a steep climb from Rossio to Chiado, with steps. The white pavement stones are slippery when wet – wear shoes with good grip.
Starting point
Praça do Comércio, in the middle of the square
