Theatre, privateers and a thousand-year-old food market – the south bank of the Thames from Tower Bridge to the Tate.

In Shakespeare's day all the fun was on the south side of the river – outside the city walls and the city's rules. Here were the theatres, the bear-baiting pits, the taverns and the prisons. The route follows the Thames west from Tower Bridge. You meet London's tallest building, a ship that sailed around the world, the theatre that burned down and the bridge that swayed.
