In the autumn of 1889 the Moulin Rouge opens, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec sits at the same table every night. But his model is gone. She was called Marie-Clémentine, had been a circus acrobat and posed for half of Montmartre. Lautrec called her something else.
You have his notebook. He searches from the cabaret at the foot of the hill, past the house where his friend Vincent lived, up to the pink house and the studios in Rue Cortot. At every stop you have to find something that stands there today – a plaque, a fountain, a street sign. Each stop gives letters, and in the end the name he gave her.
The notebook is made up. The model, the painter and what became of her are real.
Good to know
Walk it in daylight – the puzzles are read off plaques, façades and signs. It is steep: the route climbs the whole hill of Montmartre and comes down again, with cobbles and steps. Bring two phones if you can: stop 2 is split in two.
