Montmartre was a village of its own, with vineyards and windmills, right up until 1860. Cheap rents drew painters and poets, and for a few decades around 1900 this hill was the centre of the art world. The tour keeps to the back streets, away from the biggest crowds. You search for sculptures and signs that are easy to walk past – and finish on the steps in front of Sacré-Cœur.

Good to know

The route climbs all the way, with steep streets and a fair number of steps. The small garden with the love wall and the garden with the saint's statue close in the evening – walk the tour in daylight.
