The old centre of Rome is an open-air museum where the popes and their sculptors competed to build the grandest square. The Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona lie a few minutes' walk from each other.
On this tour knowing your history is not enough. You have to count columns, decipher Roman numerals and search for animals in stone to move on.
Good to know
The whole route is outdoors on public squares and can be walked at any time. Early morning or evening is least crowded, especially at the Trevi Fountain. Cobbles all the way, but no stairs.
